Bridport has a bustling market on Saturdays and Wednesdays, and excellent independent shops. Hang out in charming cafes, enjoy brilliant events at The Arts Centre and the Electric Palace. Culture vultures get well served at the annual Literary Festival as well as great music, theatre and performance in Bridport's lively venues. The September Hat festival is unique.

Favourite gardens nearby include Mapperton House and Gardens (pictured) - quietly beautiful. Forde Abbey is grand with lovely borders and particularly glorious in spring with its crocus covered lawns. Abbotsbury Tropical Gardens are interesting for their microclimate which allows unusual plants to thrive.

Wonderful beaches are close by. Eype is peaceful, brilliant for swimming but wear shoes as it's very stony. Charmouth is perfect for little ones, long flat beach and shallow waters - also good for fossils. West Bay has magnificent craggy cliffs and a long shingly gently sloping beach, also great cafes, restaurants and good fish and chips. Burton Bradstock is sandier and has the brilliant Hive Beach Cafe for delicious seafood right on the beach. There are many good pubs in the area serving great food.

There's good walking from the door and all round the area. We're right on a cycle route and Symondsbury two miles away has a good network of off road cycleways - and a cafe and welcoming pub when you've had enough exercise!
